These cost a fortune at Anthropology. These were so easy and a great way to learn short rows if you have never done them. The flowers were crocheted.

Reading a good book, making new recipes, teaching knitting classes, cleaning out junk with more to go, praying for friends and family with specific needs that need lots of prayer, cleaning, spending time with friends, exercising, and serving have kept me a little busy...

How to Make Greek Yogurt

I have been on a Make-it-Myself kick and it has been fun and money-saving. Greek yogurt is easy to make, inexpensive and the results are delicious. Start with fresh milk (check the dates and get the freshest you can) and make sure it is not ultra-pasturized. Pasturized milk is fine. Surprisingly, many of the organic milks are ultra-pasturized. Regular grocery store milk (most are not treated with hormones any more) or a reliable source of raw milk are best. I usually buy non-fat yogurt, but for this I bought 2 percent milk. I may try skim next time, but the fat content doesn't matter. The rule is: the more fat, the yummier it is. Kind of like Paula Deen's butter rule.
Pour the entire gallon in a heavy bottomed pot or your crockpot. I used the pot and stood stirring so it wouldn't burn on the bottom until the temperature reached 190 degrees. I used a thermometer. It will be foamy at the edges and the entire top with become foamy. You want the milk hot and foamy, but not boiling.

Then I placed the pot in my sink with cold water to drop the temperature to 110-120.

At this point whisk in 3 Tablespoons of fresh plain yogurt with live cultures. There again, check the date to insure freshness.

Then cover the pot with the lid and a thick towel and place it in your oven with the light left on. Close the door and leave it overnight. I left mine in the oven from 9:00pm until 7:00am. When I took the lid off, this is what I found. It looked like YOGURT! It was solid with clear whey on top. Just a note, the longer you let it cure, the more tart it becomes. Mine turned out just right for us.

At this point, place the covered pot in the refrigerator and let it set for at least 2 hours to let it firm up further.
I did not know this, but Greek Yogurt is just yogurt that has been strained. It has less whey and the protein becomes more concentrated per ounce by straining. There are lots of ways to strain yogurt. I lined a colander with wet paper towels. I wondered if this would work, but it did. The volume of yogurt was so much that it seemed to not be draining well. I removed some of it and put it in a fine screen colander by OXO. I was able to drain all of it well in about 30-40 minutes. I was worried about the paper towels getting in the yogurt, but the yogurt became cheesy against the paper and peeled right off. Some report using a thin white tee shirt to strain it works well, and others invest in an expensive chinois. The paper towel method worked just fine and if you had two colanders draining it would even be better for the volume. Next time, I may try the tee shirt.

After letting the yogurt drain, I dumped it back in the pot and whisked it to make it creamy. It is lumpy and cheesy if you don't. I then put it in clean jars. 2 quarts and a generous cup of delicious Greek yogurt were the yield from one gallon of milk. It cost me $2.89! We have plowed through one quart already. I will save a bit to use as the culture for the next batch. This site is interesting and shows other cheeses and drinks that can be made at home. How about some homemade mozzarella?

It's funny how one thing leads to another. The purchase of this wonderful mixer, the Vitamix, at our local Costco, lead to a venture in Greek yogurt making. The above may not look appetizing, but I can assure you it is. A little liquid (juice in this picture), frozen banana, pineapple, and the magic vegetable spinach (which adds no flavor, turns the smoothie green and packs nutrition) along with some yummy plain greek yogurt makes a great breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert or snack. I am smitten. I am selling my juicer, food processor and will never use my old blender again. You can make frozen treats in it and make boiling hot soup. It is amazing and best of all is the clean up. Fill it with warm water, add a drop of soap, turn it on, let it go for 30 seconds and it's clean. I love my Vitamix. Tomorrow: a lesson in yogurt making. But for now, watch the demo. It is amazing.

A Happy Birthday

My daughter celebrated her 18th birthday this week. My son and his fiance are in town and we all had dinner at a wonderful Hibachi bar, my daughter's first time and not the last I'm sure. Food is fun to eat, watch being cooked and as babies know, it is even fun to play with! It was a memorable night and my daughter had so much fun, she even danced on her chair (briefly) while a drummer drummed and the entire restaurant sang. For a quiet girl, this was a site to see! We made some great memories.

On other nights, we experimented with fondue. It was fun, delicious and entailed a learning curve. Next time we know exactly what to do: double the broth recipe (as it boils away quickly) and don't over think the amount of cheese. Yes, 1 pound of cheese is needed for 5 people...

My favorite thing all week was this yummy salad though. Pears are in season and they are so good in salad. This recipe seriously made my taste buds explode! And it is gluten free!

Pear & Bleu Cheese Salad

1 bag (10 oz) fresh spring greens or baby spinach
1 red onion, thinly sliced
1-2 pears, thinly sliced or cubed
1/2 cup bleu cheese, crumbled
1/2 cup candied pecans
1/4 cup dried cranberries

Dressing:
1/4 cup maple syrup
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup olive oil
1/3 cup mayonaise
3/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 teaspoon ground pepper

My company leaves on Saturday morning and I am now unemployed. I plan to clean out closets, actually finish the basement, start teaching knitting lessons from my home (so far 15 people are interested!) and have dinner on the table every night at a decent time. I hope to finish my sweater by the end of the month. I have Christmas stockings to knit for Chad and Christen and my stocking-less new grandson. I may dust off my sewing machine. I will exercise, spend time in God's word, take meals to friends and go to lunch once in a while. I have hopes that 2012 will bring new joy, some rest and a deeper knowledge of God.

I don't know if any of you have looked at Mother of the Groom dresses lately...but I'm scared. I have been on a weight loss regime which has stalled over the holidays, but I fear I will never find a dress.
What is interesting to me is that the dresses do not look like they are made for post-menopausal women who actually have born children and lived through the teen years. I know there are some of you out there that can just slip into one of these cute little numbers, but I am not one of them. Well endowed and the real deal makes the little tops ridiculous. And what's with the mermaid look? Some of us have hips. So...the hunt begins. I'm telling you, it's as bad as bathing suit shopping, but with fewer colors to pick from. Oh, and I forgot to mention spider veins. I never realized they were a problem until I got a pedicure recently and the girl looked at me with pity in her eyes and said," Oh...your legs are so bad...at least they are not on your face!" Lucky me I guess.
So you tell me, am I whining without cause?
Here you can find anorexic - looking models who in no way have children even old enough to have weddings.

I know I will find a dress eventually, but I may have to knit a jacket to wear over it...

Last Sunday we went to hear the May Festival Chorus perform Handel's Messiah at Cincinnati's Music Hall.

The chandelier is stunning coming down from a circular mural of angels.

The acoustics are wonderful, the embellishments on the walls are historic and the deep red furnishings made it look very festive. The performance was wonderful and very memorable.

Hallelujah: for the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth. The kingdom of this world has become the kingdom of our Lord, and of His Christ; and He shall reign for ever and ever. King of Kings, and Lord of Lords. Hallelujah!

I don't have a picture of this delicious Christmas concoction, but all I can say is it was a big hit! Not for the person omitting, caffeine, sugar or fat from their diet, but definitely for the person who loves deliciousness. (Is that a word?) Even my non-coffee loving friends enjoyed it!

Latte Punch

1/3 cup instant coffee
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup boiling water
1/2 gallon 2% milk
1/2 pint real whipping cream
1/2 gallon vanilla ice cream

Add coffee and sugar to the boiling water and stir until dissolved and let cool. Add to milk and refrigerate overnight in an air tight container.

Before serving, pour coffee mixture into a large punch bowl or serving bowl and add unwhipped whipping cream and ice cream. Let the mixture set for thirty minutes or until the ice cream has softened and foamed on top. Ladle into cups and enjoy!

This year I did very little Christmas knitting. Sorry kiddos and everyone else. Mom is pooped. I need to read, pray, drink lots of breve sugar-free hazelnut lattes and sleep (maybe not in that order- no decaf for me). I need to clean out closets and the infernal basement. I need to make something for me. I am still working on my cabled sweater, taking a small hiatus, but I have been perusing some patterns.
How about these beautiful mitts? I have been wanting to do some colorwork.

This is the year of the cowl, and there is something striking about this simple pattern.

I prayed for them because they are discovering more about who they are. Raising children is not just about raising children. It is about raising parents. It is about growing, learning to not be selfish, and learning how to let go. It is trusting God to take the work that you do (or did) as a parent and not having it return void. Families are a great place to learn how to die to self and serve others. I am praying this Christmas is one in which the fruit of our labors is profitable and that God will bless our efforts in the lives of our children and grandchildren.

I love to knit cables. There is something so satisfying watching a piece grow and a design emerge. I'm on vacation and there is a lot of this going on but sometimes little things throw me: instructions like END ON WRONG SIDE. My brain lays tricks and I try to over think it.
End so that I am going to knit the wrong side next?
End finishing the wrong side?
Well, I am thankful for google. First of all, I found out that I am not the only one whose mind plays tricks on them. My same question is asked on facebook, knitting forums and other random sites. The second thing is that the truth can be known on the issue! End on WS means: end after completing a wrong side row.
Which brings me to another point. Life is confusing and many things puzzle us as we go along the way. Relationships, disasters, injustices, and life in general. We are puzzled because we are small and finite. I am grateful that my maker knows the answers. His Word has the answers to our questions. The things that seem fuzzy, He will reveal. His Word is there to explain His purposes. Our part is to read and trust Him. Believe, he says. Trust. Obey.

Lentil Sausage Soup

Every once in a while you try a new recipe that the entire family agrees hands down a winner. Last night was one of those nights. This is delicious, easy and inexpensive. It is a very hardy soup.

Lentil and Sausage Soup

1/2 lb. sweet Italian sausage
1 large onion, chopped
1 stalk celery, finely chopped
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
1 (16 ounce) package dry lentils, rinsed
1 cup shredded carrot
8 cups water
2 (14.5 ounce) cans chicken broth
1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
2 bay leaves
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/4 teaspoon dried basil
1 tablespoon salt, or to taste
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 lb. ditalini pasta (optional) Leave it out for gluten free!

Place sausage in a large pot. Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown. Add onion, celery and chopped garlic, and saute until tender and translucent. Stir in lentils, carrot, water, chicken broth and tomatoes. Season with garlic powder, parsley, bay leaves, oregano, thyme, basil, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat. Cover, and simmer for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, or until lentils are tender.
Stir in pasta, and cook 15 to 20 minutes, or until pasta is tender.

My Dad

My dad was a high school English teacher. When I was young, we spent many hours talking about books. I remember sitting in our Dodge station wagon waiting for the movie to start at our local drive-in, listening to him expound on his favorite piece of literature. I always enjoyed those conversations. Because of his failing health over the past few years, our conversations became simpler. I did the talking and he would give short answers. The last time I was able to see him was June, even though Parkinson's and the resulting aphasia made it difficult for him to speak, he leaned forward intently listening as my husband read the Bible to him. He was hanging on every word. He was a learner and and learned late in life to trust the God who created him.
This picture is one painted by one of his students many years ago. Dad taught classical literature and loved the Great Books. This is an accurate caricature of him during the time it was painted.
He is now with the author of the greatest book of all.

Yarn Therapy

One day, while on my trip I went to the new location of The Yarn Lady, one of my favorite yarn shops. It is under new ownership, in a new location and chock full of beautiful yarn. The basket full of yarn "ropes" below were squishy soft and meant to be finger knitted; an easy, bulky project for a quick, warm scarf. I had never seen anything like it before. It could be braided or made into a giant chain stitched scarf. I was too tired to remember the brand...

This lampshade made me smile. It looked like something out of the PB catalog for children.

My favorite yarn (actually a toss up with Beaverslide) was there in all it's colorful goodness. Madelinetosh Yarns are no where to be found in my neck of the woods, so I always have to rely on computer images. They are close, but not nearly as good as seeing this gorgeous yarn in person. The sock weight is lovely.

Madelinetosh Vintage was there in an array of my favorite colors and I was coveting that pumpkin you see in the bottom right corner. The yarn has a shine, is soft, and has great stitch definition. The depth of color is unmatched. Funny how just walking through a yarn store is so soothing. Imagining creations, feeling the softness and texture of the natural fibers that God has provided for warmth and art was just what the doctor ordered. I didn't even buy anything, but after a stroll through the yarn, I was ready for a peaceful nap.

Home Sweet Home

A big brother with a baby brother is a sweet thing. Hudson was very gentle and tender with his new sibling. It was a joy to see. I will miss these little guys.

My dad's service was very moving and honoring of his life. He was a jovial person and the memories shared about him evoked many enjoyable memories. At Riverside National Cemetary, we saw him honored by the United States Air Force. The tenderness shown by the officer as he gave the flag to my father's wife was especially memorable.

I am happy to be home. Two weeks of high emotion without my husband and daughter was enough for me. Even those sweet grandchildren couldn't erase my need for the relationship I have with my dear husband. Thoughtful friends brought meals to my husband and daughter in my absence.

My friend called me and said she is planting daffodils in my yard in honor of my dad. When spring comes it will be a beautiful remembrance. I am blessed to have a loving husband, children, grandchildren and friends.

My trip has taken a turn. This precious boy was born at 1:04 Monday morning after traipsing around Disneyland with my son, his wife and my grandson. Labor commenced as we left the park, became fairly regular on the ride home and a few hours and 2 pushes later, Jude Dawson entered the world, a sweet reminder that only God gives life: a welcome gift in light of my dad's passing. On my father's ninth day in heaven, his 14th great-grandchild was born.

And he said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD." Job 1:21.

Willis (Bill) AnthonyLennertz passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 15, 2011. He was born onMarch 24, 1930 in Chicago Heights, Illinois to Willis and Anna Lennertz. Heattended Bloom High School in Chicago Heights, lettering in football andbaseball. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force duringthe Korean War. Graduating from Whittier College in 1957 with his Bachelor’sdegree and a Master in Education in 1970, he taught English at La Habra HighSchool for 33 years. He retired from La Vista High School in 1991, a well-lovedteacher who greatly impacted many students over the years.

Bill spent many yearscoaching Little League baseball and influencing the lives of young athletes. Hewas known for his warm, fun-loving personality and passion for life. He enjoyedcamping, fishing, reading, debating, writing, painting, animals, and gardeningand is best known for his telling of stories and wonderful sense of humor. Latein life, Bill came to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ and wasbaptized in the summer of 2006.

He was preceded in death byhis brother, Dr. James Lennertz. Bill is survived by his wife, Linda; children,Deborah (Todd) Collins of Cincinnati, Ohio, Kimberly (Greg) Joyce of Anchorage,Alaska and Pastor Steven (Katherine) Lennertz of Menifee, CA; stepchildren,Kristine (Michael) Jenkins of Gilbert, Arizona and Jay (Sandi) Hill of SanJose, California; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will beheld on Friday, October 28 at North Coast Church, 2405 N. Santa Fe Ave.,Vista,CA in the Chapel at 10:00am. A color guard will be present at his interment atRiverside National Cemetery at 2:00pm on the same day.

My sister and husband came for a visit. We had a great time and even ventured out to Amish country one afternoon, eating at Murphin Ridge, our favorite place. Kim is cancer free and we rejoice. Cancer is a terrible disease.
She is the one who inspired me to begin knitting. Her husband is sporting Brooklyntweed's Turn a Square hat. We were able to spend some evenings knitting, she on a baby blanket and I am finishing up a scarf.
Last night we received word that our dad is failing and will be making his residence in Heaven soon. My second grandchild is also due any day. Lots on my mind as I pack and make preparations. Life is short and eternity is forever.

Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. This is one of the things I did today. I found the pie crust recipe here. It was the first time to use my food processor for pie crust and it was so easy. The pastry turned out very flaky. This is my pie filling recipe.

Apple Pie

1 cup sugar, plus 2 tablespoons divided
4 tablespoons flour, divided
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 dash nutmeg
7 large Gravenstein, Granny Smith or other tart type apples, peeled and cored, cut into slices (I use my nifty apple corer/slicer)
2 Tablespoons butter

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons sugar and 2 tablespoons flour. Spread this mixture on bottom crust to absorb liquid. Combine remaining sugar, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg in a bowl and mix well. Pour sugar mixture over sliced apples and mix well. Pour apples into pie crust. Dot with butter.

Roll out top crust and place on top of apples. Crimp edges and make 5 (1 1/2-inch long) slits on top of pie crust. Brush top crust lightly with milk. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake for 5 minutes. Then reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake for 1 hour.

I see many of these in my future. This really is a fun and quick knit.
Today I went to a baby shower. It brought back so many memories for me. Four different babies, four different seasons of life when each of them came to us, either from birth or adoption, I was once the honoree. But today, it was a joy to see the women there honor this soon-to-be mom. As the women went around the room and affirmed her for the qualities they see in her that God will use to train up her child, there were tears and love and gifts! It is good to go to celebrations. They cause us to stop and think and ponder the future. They cause us to reflect and be grateful for the past. We need to have more celebrations.

This hat uses short rows with wraps. This video is very helpful and your stitches come out beautifully if you remember to slip the stitch knitwise and replace purlwise (tip to tip) when knitting. When purling, slip purlwise and replace purlwise. Since I don't have a real baby to try it on, the button might be in the wrong place, but that is easily remedied. This is a great stash buster, fast, easy and really cute!

The temperature has dropped, the leaves are beginning to fall a little and it is time to wear a hat. This is a variation on Ann's Cap, using I Love This Cotton and a size 8 circular needle. I did the ribbing for 5 inches, rather than switching to another stitch before coming to the top. On purpose, you ask? I'll never tell. I do like it though.
I made pumpkin bread to celebrate the beginning of fall and this recipe is delicious, moist and easy.

Pumpkin Spice Bread
3 cups sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs, lightly beaten
1 (16 ounce) can solid pack pumpkin
3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon ground cloves
½ teaspoon ground allspice
½ cup water

In a large bowl, combine sugar, oil and eggs. Add pumpkin and mix well. Combine dry ingredients; add to the pumpkin mixture alternately with water. Pour into two greased 9-in. x 5-in. x 3-in. loaf pans. Bake at 350 degrees F for 60-65 minutes or until bread tests done. Cool in pans 10 minutes before removing to a wire rack; cool completely.

There are those transitional moments in knitting when you need to be attentive, not answer the phone or put it down for 2 days and try to come back to what you were doing. That's when you goof up. I do not make notes. I keep it in my head, which is very dangerous as my brain has developed holes through which important information seems to seep out. So, I attached my sleeves, counted my stitches, found that I had WAY too many, ripped it out, to discover I had the page of the pattern turned to the children's size, not the adult. The sleeves are now attached, the proper amount of stitches being held on holders and I am on my way. It's a good thing I enjoy the process of knitting or these types of events would be highly discouraging.

So fall is in the air. How do I know? My allergies are in full swing preventing me from the full enjoyment of the glorious weather! I've been baking pumpkin muffins (seen sans icing...)
And I am contemplating soup. This recipe from Paula Dean is going on next week's menu.

Italian Chicken and Vegetable Soup

2 tablespoon olive oil
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces (about 1 3/4 poun
1 small onion, chopped
1 cup sliced carrots (about 3 small)
2 1/2 cup sliced zucchini (about 2 medium)
2 (14.5-ounce) cans diced tomatoes with basil, garlic, and oregano
2 (14.5-ounce) cans chicken broth

In a large Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add chicken, and cook for 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Add onion and carrot, and cook for 5 minutes. Stir in zucchini, diced tomatoes, and chicken broth. Bring to a boil; reduce heat, and simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes. Top each serving with grated Parmesan cheese, if desired. This is even gluten free!

I was getting ready to begin the day schooling two of my children. The TV was on when the first plane hit. My daughter was very young but my son was old enough to know that something was very wrong. He began to cry and wanted to talk to his dad. We called my husband at work, and he assured my son that God was in control, that even though no one knew what exactly was going on, that God did, and He was good, and He would be with us through whatever was happening. It was horrible. A pit in the stomach. Horror. Evil is like that.
Now ten years later we hope nothing like that will never happen again. I imagine it is how holocaust survivors feel. I feel that way when I pull out the pictures of my daughter who at one time lay starving to death in an orphanage. We long for evil to cease. May we continue to tell the stories so none of us forget.

Our president read Psalm 46 this morning.

What's for Dinner?

In Ohio, it is fall. After 52 straight days of rain this spring and record high temperatures in summer, we are enjoying a respite. Cool nights and cool days which put us in the mood for hot chocolate, Christmas knitting and anything pumpkin. Which brings me to my next point.
There is little to no pumpkin in Cincinnati. Pumpkin pie filling abounds, but no canned pumpkin. A plethora of yummy looking pumpkin recipes cross my email and cooking websites that I peruse, but they are of no use without pumpkin. Well, I spent the morning on a hunt and decided to think out of the box. Whole Foods has pumpkin!!! I bought 8 cans and will buy more for next year before the season is over.

Sometimes breakfast for dinner is good. This is an easy casserole that everyone always loves, and it is gluten free.

Farmers Casserole

3 cup shredded frozen hashbrowns
3/4 cup shredded jack cheese
1 cup diced ham
1/4 cup chopped green onions
4 eggs
1 12 oz. can evaporated milk
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/8 teaspoon salt

Place potatoes in 8 in. square pan. Sprinkle with cheese, ham and onions. Beat eggs, milk, pepper, and salt. Pour over all. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Remove 30 minutes before baking to sit on counter. Bake at 350 uncovered for 55-60 min or until knife comes out clean.

And for fall, these muffins are perfect and delicious! (Not gluten free though...)

Pumpkin-Apple Streusel Muffins
Yield: 18 muffins

2 1/2 c. flour
2 c. sugar
2 t cinnamon
1/2 t nutmeg
1/2 t ginger
1 t baking soda
1/2 t salt
2 eggs, beaten
1 c. solid pack pumpkin
1/2 c. oil
2 c. apple, peeled and chopped
2 T flour
1/4 c. sugar
1/2 t cinnamon
2 t butter

Combine dries. combine eggs, pumpkin, and oil. Add liquid ingredients to dry; stir until moistened. Stir in apples. Spoon batter into cups until 3/4 full. Sprinkle with streusel topping. Bake in 350 oven for 35 to 40 minutes.

After hot temps in the high 90's all weekend, fall is here. The high will be 66 today and I am all about that! Sweaters, wool socks and hot tea are in order. Pumpkin Spice lattes have arrived at Starbucks! I have never been a fan of summer. I like the relaxed days and the light summer meals, but I abhor humidity and flying, biting creatures. I always have visions of sipping iced tea on my deck, but in the Midwest, it just is not fun for me. Fall in just fine, thank you!

Saturday we went to a beautiful wedding. It was hot, but the beauty of the wedding made up for the heat. These gorgeous quilts were on display, marking the area for the outside reception.

A photo booth was provided for guests to have their pictures taken.

These beautiful hydrangeas were scattered about the yard.

Even the food was pretty.

There was lots of it, all lovingly prepared and displayed by friends.

Iced beverages were in abundance on this hot day.

The guest book was a framed monogram of buttons. Guests signed the mat.

The bridesmaids were carrying fall in their hands.

Washing the Washing Machine

I have a front load washer. I love it and have worked hard to avoid the funky smell that people report, though a hint was noticeable and the plastic window seemed to have a coating. I have not done the monthly clean as the manufacturer of Whirlpool recommended, because the bleach they recommend is known to breakdown the parts. I leave the door cracked at all times to air it out and have been known to be cranky with others in my home who close it. in my internet wanderings, I came upon this. I bought some at Kroger for $9.99. It seemed expensive, but I wanted to give it a try. As I researched the topic, some reported that for a first time use, they used the entire package (3 tablets). I decided to use 2. I ran my regular clean cycle and was amazed. My washer smelled clean! No funk. In the package are wipes which grab any residue around and under the seal. There was a HUGE amount of gunk that had come loose after the treatment. The residue build up is SOAP. All these new fangled detergents are so full of junk that just collects in our machines and cause the smell. I am a believer. I will be using this monthly (1 tab from now on) and trying some new soap.
I have been experimenting with other detergents, even making my own and I am still using my homemade detergent on towels and rags, but have found it is not very good on stains.
I had begun using Tide Total for my darks. I'm not sure this is available in all markets. It is guaranteed not to fade them. It has fabric softener in it, the scent stays in your clothes and is very expensive. I have liked it, but after cleaning my machine, I am sure that it was contributing to the funk and junk.
Recently I bought some Mrs. Meyers laundry detergent. It has essential oils, the scent is faint but pleasing. I actually like it, except that on further inspection, I found that all of the ingredients are not natural and can be irritating. I am going to try something else next time, but may come back to it.
I ordered some Charlie's Soap from Amazon.com for 10.00 for 80 loads. With just the three of us, that will last for a while. The reviews were very favorable. I'll keep you posted.

I know I'm pathetic, but I'm going to town on another Wallaby for Amy. I love this sweater and lucky for me, she does too. Knitting in Beaverslide is always a pleasure.

The green bean harvest was plentiful and I've been busy blanching and freezing beans. One of my family's favorite ways to enjoy beans for the remaining hot days of summer is below.

Summer Beans

Blanche (place beans into already boiling water for 2 minutes, then plunge into ice water)

Lay them out in a pan and cover with your favorite Italian Dressing overnight.

They will be crunchy and flavorful.

This summer, some of my favorite people have been joining me on Tuesday nights for movie night. We have watched all of Anne of Green Gables, Pride and Prejudice (old and new), Sense and Sensibility and this week, Emma. Though sentimental and unrealistic at times, they do speak to our desire for beauty and love. Each time I watch, a new line pops out at me, bearing truth about a matter that concerns me. It has been fun. The other enjoyable part about movie night is dessert. This week I served an old favorite.

Creamy Cheesecake

1 graham cracker crust
2 8 oz. packages cream cheese
3/4 c. sugar
2 t vanilla
2 eggs
1 c. sour cream
2 t sugar
2 t vanilla

Beat cream cheese, add eggs, sugar and vanilla. Beat well. Spread in pie crust. Bake at 325 for 20 minutes. Blend sour cream, sugar and vanilla. Spread over cake and refrigerate until chilled. Serve topped with berries of your choice.

I'm a little late on today's What's for Dinner, but here it is. Soup. We love Mexican food, having grown up in California. This is a recipe that we love. It is full of flavor and yummy year 'round.

Chicken Tortilla Soup

2 skinless, boneless chicken
breasts
1/2 teaspoon olive oil
1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
2 (14.5 ounce) cans chicken
broth
1 cup frozen corn kernels
1 cup chopped onion
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 cup chunky salsa
Tortilla chips
1/2 cup shredded Monterey
Jack cheese (optional)
Fresh cilantro
1. In a large pot over medium heat, saute the chicken in the oil for 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cumin and mix well. Then add the broth, corn, onion, chili powder, lemon juice and salsa. Reduce heat to low and simmer for about 20 to 30 minutes.
2. Break up some tortilla chips into individual bowls and pour soup over chips. Top with the Monterey Jack cheese, sour cream and fresh cilantro.

Bad Haircut

Poor Pippin. I told the groomer, "Oh sure, cut it really short." Boy, am I sorry. His head looks huge. His legs are so skinny. He looks like a rat. Oh well, he is still sweet and it will grow.

This hat is so much fun. Using Cascade 220 and some Plymouth Boku, it is a surprise as you go. You don't really know how the colors will play until they are knitted. I did finish it and it is blocking. Pictures to follow.

The 70's weren't all bad

35 years ago today, in 1976, I married my best friend. I still like him. We understand one another and look out for the interests of each other. We attempt to be patient with each other. I feel loved. He feels loved. We have been through trials and through it all we have remained close. We are celebrating at our favorite place, Murphin Ridge.

These dear children are our greatest accomplishment, each one loved and very special to us. As families grow, they begin to look like this:

We are so grateful for Hayley, our beautiful and talented daughter-in-law, who is such a help to our son. She is a wonderful mother to Hudson and it is a joy to watch her care for him. We look forward to our newest addition in October. We are excited to see what God will do in the lives of each of our children.

Needles and Yarn

Today I wound yarn. Can you tell which skein gave me trouble?

This lovely Beaverslide will be ANOTHER wallaby, this time for my daughter. Every time I think I have enough needles, I find I need another size. In case of fire, I have told my husband grab my laptop, the picture box and my knitting needles. This is not a cheap hobby. I have more in needles than I have in jewelry. It is 8:10 and all of the purveyors of Addi Turbos in a 6/24 are closed. Of course I have my knit picks interchangeables, but have I sprung for the 24 inch cable? Of course not. By the time I pay shipping, I may as well get the Addi's. Hmmm. So instead of casting on another Wallaby ( I am addicted) I will cast on a hat for hubby that I actually have needles for.

Today I picked fresh green beans and jalapenos from the garden. The purple beans turn a gray-green when cooked and they have a mild flavor.

Baby Owlie is blocking. The hat pattern is here. Someday with a real grandbaby in it, I will post better pictures. My son and his wife are photographers and they will do this justice with their own beautiful child gracing it. This is such a fun pattern and a quick knit. Grandbaby 2 is due in October and I thought this color would be cute for fall.

I have never seen a field of artichokes before, but I would love to. In fact I would love to HAVE a field of artichokes, because we think they are delicious. Raw out of the can, steamed with lemon butter or mayo on the side or marinated, they are wonderful in the kitchen. This simple and easy recipe is fast and easy in a pinch. It is a great one to serve company. It is also gluten free! ( As long as you haven't contaminated your mayo with bread crumbs. We keep a separate squeeze bottle for when we know we will have gluten free guests!)

Artichoke Chicken

1 (15 ounce) can artichoke
hearts, drained and chopped
3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
3/4 cup mayonnaise
1 pinch garlic powder
4 skinless, boneless chicken
breast halves

1.    Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
2.    In a medium bowl, mix together the artichoke hearts, Parmesan cheese, mayonnaise, and garlic powder. Place chicken in a greased baking dish, and cover evenly with artichoke mixture.
3.    Bake, uncovered, for 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until chicken is no longer pink in the center and juices run clear.

Accompany it with brown rice and a tossed green salad and you have a yummy quick dinner. This easy recipe makes perfect brown rice.

Foolproof Oven-baked Brown Rice from Cook's Illustrated

1 1/2 cups long-, medium- or short-grain brown rice
2 1/3 cups water
2 teaspoons unsalted butter or vegetable oil
1/2 teaspoon salt

1. Adjust the oven rack to middle position; heat oven to 375 degrees. Spread rice in 8-inch square baking dish.
2. Bring water and butter or oil to boil, covered, in medium saucepan over high heat; once boiling, immediately stir in salt and pour water over rice. Cover baking dish tightly with doubled layer of foil. Bake rice 1 hour, until tender.
3. Remove baking dish from oven and uncover. Fluff rice with dinner fork, then cover dish with clean kitchen towel; let rice stand 5 minutes. Uncover and let rice stand 5 minutes longer; serve immediately.

An 8-inch ceramic baking dish with a lid may be used instead of the baking dish and foil. To double the recipe, use a 13 by 9-inch baking dish; the baking time need not be increased.

Owls

Who knew it was so easy to knit an owl? And who is the clever person that figured this out? Knitters that are clever enough to come up with these cute designs to keep the rest of us amused always amaze me. This is a sneak peek at my next project. Stay tuned.....

My last child is entering her senior year. We have homeschooled all of our children and so I am in a flurry of paperwork to notify our district, have everything cued up for college applications and gather all of our materials for our last year. I remember beginning this great adventure 25 years ago when my oldest, now 30 began Kindergarten at home. We "did" school. We had strollers full of books that we lugged home from the library. We listened to Adventures in Odyssey and saw every Little House on the Prairie ever made. We read the entire series four times over, to each child individually. Teaching a child to read and understanding their problems in a way a teacher can only hint at knowing was such a thrill. We caught bugs and hatched butterflies and dissected cow eyeballs. We went to Disneyland on Tuesdays in October and NEVER found ourselves in rush hour traffic. We went to concerts, sat through piano, voice, recorder and violin lessons. We attended 23 years of piano recitals. We went to basketball and soccer games, swimming and gymnastics lessons. To this day, it is our of my comfort zone to go to the grocery store on a Saturday with the rest of the world. My kids were able to study with the best music teachers no matter where we lived because of our flexible availability, building a firm base for their future careers. (of my boys, one is a composer, one a worship leader/songwriter/singer, one is a theater major) I am so grateful that God allowed us to raise our children in this way. This is the last hurrah!

What's For Dinner?

We love peppers. Banana peppers are a must on sandwiches and pizza. Red peppers are so good in so many summer salads. Purple peppers? Well, these are new. They are small and taste a little like snap peas. It is so much fun to find a new variety to grow in the garden.
Today is What's For Dinner Thursday. This is one of our favorite ways to grill chicken or split cornish game hens. The relish is fun on the side, but any sweet chutney or salsa would be fine too.

Grilled Chicken with Rhubarb Relish
chicken skinned
salt and pepper
lemon juice
olive oil

You can marinate the chicken in half lemon juice and olive oil, or make a mixture and just brush it on while it grills. It is really simple and delicious. You could even try this on the Foreman grill!

Relish
3 cups diced rhubarb
3/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon grated orange zest
1 cup orange juice
1 jalapeno, seeded and chopped

Place all ingredients for sauce in saucepan and boil, reduce heat and simmer until thick, about 10 minutes. Let cool. Make this ahead of time.
Grill chicken, salt and peppered, brushed with lemon juice and olive oil.Make a green salad with lots of tomatoes and pepper from your garden and serve a crusty bread and you've got dinner!

Today it is cool. Finally. It has been hot as blazes this summer and I haven't opened my windows once, until this morning. The birds are singing, laundry is tumbling in the wash and coffee is brewing.
I read yesterday that contentment means to rest in what one already has and seek nothing more. It is a difficult thing for most of us. But I am grateful that as I am aging (egads!) I am growing in this area. New things for the home, collections (remember the Precious Moments or Beanie Babies?) and other clutter that just needs cleaning, sorting or organizing are all things that weigh us down. Less is More and I continue to get rid of things. This is not some new environmentalist idea. The Jews had to pick up and leave when God told them to. I moved many times and it took weeks to prepare. Jesus didn't have a caravan following him to carry all of his stuff. I'm not sure he even had stuff... I finally finished something this summer. I know this about myself: I have to make progress on something creative or I feel like I'm floundering. Just by finishing this, I feel new inspiration. I truly love this sweater and have a pile of Beaverslide to wind for a new one for my daughter. I never get tired of this sweater, the Wonderful Wallaby by Cottage Creations.

Today is What's for Dinner Thursday....here tis...another summer favorite. This recipe brings back old memories. My neighbor, Carole, was a wonderful cook. This was a refreshing, easy, summertime recipe. Her son visited with us recently which brought back memories of Carole's delicious cooking.

Carole's Sesame Chicken Salad

2 boneless chicken breast halves, cooked
and chopped (grilled is really good!)
1 cup light mayonnaise
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon white sugar
1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 small head napa cabbage
2 green onions, chopped
1 tablespoon sesame seeds, toasted
1 carrot, shredded
1/2 cup crispy fried rice noodles, for garnish (Ramen noodles work)

1. Several hours before serving make the dressing. Combine mayonnaise, sesame oil, sugar and ginger. Cover and refrigerate.
2. Thinly slice the cabbage and place in large bowl along with the cubed chicken. Add the green onions, toasted sesame seeds and shredded carrot. Toss then mix in the dressing. Divide salad onto serving plates and top with additional green onion and crispy rice noodles.

Today is my number 2 son's birthday. He has grown in to a wonderful husband, father, musician and friend, besides just being a great son. His son had a greeting for his Daddy today. A grandma just has to share!

In honor of the birthday boy and in his absence (as he is a California dweller now), I baked the cake that was served at my baby shower before his birth. It remains a family favorite. There is nothing healthy about it. :-)

Phoebe's Fudge Cake

1 Devil's Food Cake Mix
1 3 ounce chocolate pudding
4 eggs
1/1/2 c sour cream
1/2 c water
2 t instant coffee (I use espresso powder)
1/2 c oil
1 12 oz. pkg. chocolate chips

Mix all together and pour into greased and floured Bundt pan. Bake at 350 for 1 hour. Dust with powdered sugar when cool.

This is the morning's harvest. And yes, those are purple green beans. The flavor is a little more mild and they actually turn green-ish when cooked. The tomatoes are just starting to come in.

The sweater is almost done...finishing the hood and then a kitchener stitch to the top of it and seaming the underarms. I love this pattern and am probably casting on a new one for my daughter when this is finished. The color turned out funky in the picture. It's too hot to go out again for natural light...

This recipe has been a family favorite for a long time. Coming from Southern California, and living in Arizona for 5 years, we love the flavors of the Southwest! You could adjust the liquid and use long cooking brown rice if you have time.

Hot Santa Fe Chicken

2 boneless skinless chicken breasts, cubed
1 ⅛ teaspoon salt (or more to taste)
⅛ teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoon oil
½ cup onions chopped
1 ½ cup chicken broth
2 cup instant brown rice uncooked
10 oz. frozen corn, thawed
1 16 oz. can pinto beans, rinsed and drained
¼ cup green onions chopped fine
¼ cup cilantro, chopped
2 jalapenos, seeded and minced
2 teaspoon chili powder
¼ C. balsamic vinegar
10 oz. corn chips
Season chicken with salt and pepper. Saute chicken until until golden brown. Remove to dish. Cook onion over medium-high heat 2-3 minutes, until just soft. add broth and rice, boil, stir and reduce to low. cover and let rice absorb liquid, 18-20 minutes. Stir in corn and beans. simmer, covered 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in other ingredients.

What's For Dinner?

It is too hot to cook, but we still need to prepare meals for our family. And don't let these 90's fool you. It is like a sauna out there. Here is this week's "What's for Dinner?" The key is to not cook anything if you don't have to. A Costco chicken is a weekly staple in the summer heat and can easily be used instead of cooking the chicken yourself. The seasoning might not be the same, but when you are hot, who cares?
Disclaimer: this is an interactive map. When I posted it, it was completely bright red with temps in the high 90's.
Southwest Chicken Salad

3 teaspoon(s) olive oil
1 ¼ pound(s) chicken-breast tenders, cut diagonally into 3/4-inch-wide pieces
1 teaspoon(s) ground cumin
¼ teaspoon(s) dried oregano
Salt
1 small (4- to 6-ounce) onion, chopped
1 can(s) (15- to 19-ounce) red kidney beans, rinsed and drained
2 ear(s) corn, kernels cut from cobs (use a crispy canned corn if you would like)
1 medium (4- to 6-ounce) red pepper, chopped
1 cup(s) salsa
⅓ cup(s) reduced-fat sour cream
1 bag(s) (10-ounce) cut romaine lettuce

1. In 12-inch nonstick skillet, heat 2 teaspoons oil on medium 1 minute. Toss chicken with cumin, oregano, and 1/4 teaspoon salt; add to skillet and cook 10 to 12 minutes or until chicken loses its pink color throughout, stirring occasionally. With slotted spoon, transfer chicken to bowl.
2. To same skillet, add onion and remaining 1 teaspoon oil and cook 10 to 12 minutes or until onion is tender and lightly browned.
3. Meanwhile, in medium bowl, combine beans, corn, and red pepper; set aside. In small bowl, combine salsa and sour cream for dressing.
4. Remove skillet from heat; stir in cooked chicken. On 1 large platter or 6 dinner plates, place romaine; top with bean mixture, then chicken mixture. Serve with salsa dressing.

What's For Dinner?

This is not dinner. I don't have a picture of the recipe I'm sharing... And dessert always looks good. The above is Coconut Yagoot topped with Raspberries. If you don't live in Cincinnati, I feel sorry for you. Yagoot is my favorite frozen treat. Low calorie and purely delicious...but back to dinner.
My husband and I work with young adults and we have lots of new brides. New brides need recipes. Old brides need recipes. If you cook for yourself, you need recipes. So on Thursdays, I will be offering What's for Dinner. This recipe is actually one of my son's favorite meals. It sounds kind of strange, but trust me. It's yummy. And after you eat it, you can try and find some dessert as yummy as our Yagoot.

Macaroni Stir Fried Chicken

1/2 (16-ounce package) medium-size shell macaroni (3 cups)(rice pasta for gluten free)
2 whole large chicken breasts (2 pounds)
3/4 pound green beans 
2 T. olive oil
Salt 
2 teaspoons peeled and grated ginger root or 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
2 tablespoons soy sauce (I use low sodium)

2 tablespoons lime juice 
1 (15-1/4 to 19-ounce) can red kidney beans, drained

ABOUT 45 MINUTES BEFORE SERVING:
Prepare macaroni as label directs; drain. Meanwhile, cut chicken into 3/4-inch cubes. Cut green beans into 1-inch pieces.
In  nonstick 5-quart Dutch oven over medium-high heat, add 1 T. oil,  add green beans and 1/4 teaspoon salt; cook, stir fry until beans are coated with oil. Add 1/4 cup water and stir-fry until beans are tender-crisp;  spoon into bowl.
In same Dutch oven over high heat, add 1 more T. oil (or more :-); add chicken, ginger, and 1/4  teaspoon salt; stir-fry until chicken loses its pink color, about 4  minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in soy sauce, lime juice, kidney beans,  shell macaroni, and green beans. Serve warm.

Anne of Green Gables

I have always loved this movie. The scenery, the language, the poetry and the warm rich characters make it a joy to watch. Last night some of my favorite girls came over and we had an Anne of Green Gables night. We watched, had ice cream to celebrate our 90+ temps and high humidity and watched again.
I was thinking how timeless this movie is. An orphan girl is taken in and becomes the object of great love in a family. A friendship is forged based on forgiveness and long-suffering. A young man persists in pursuing a woman he loves. It is idyllic, and the real world doesn't seem to move along as seamlessly as Anne's world, which is WHY it is great entertainment. It offers a respite from the harsh realities of life. It truly is a story wrapped in beauty. Anne herself often gets lost in beauty, which is one reason viewers find her so attractive.
I have several friends who love beauty and make it their business to share it with others. Amy Whitehouse is a talented artist and lover of all things beautiful, inside and out! You can check out her work here.

Vacation Knitting Fail

I always look forward to extended knitting time on a plane. On the flight to California, I started this hat and realized I didn't bring the bigger size needle I needed to finish. FAIL. I read my Kindle instead.

As a middle seat holder on my flight home, upon pulling out my knitting, I flung one of my bamboo needles against the wall of the airplane where it landed between the foot of my sleeping window seat companion and the wall. I watched her kick it and move it with her foot the entire flight. This is another good reason to abandon the bamboo and only use circulars. I did this because the size I needed was occupied with another project at home. Anyway, as we landed, she woke up and I asked her for the needle. FAIL.

The Surprise

Our kids gave us an amazing gift to celebrate our 35th anniversary a little early. After a fun picnic lunch at the beach with everyone, they sent us on our way to the Blue Lantern Inn in Dana Point, California.

This was the view from our patio. It was the most beautiful of days. It had been overcast all week and that day the sun came out!

The flowers in the area were breathtaking.

In the afternoon, hors d'oeuvres were served and we sat on the porch at a table looking over the harbor.

Then it was time to head to Crystal Cove where our kids treated us to dinner at the Beachcomber. You park in a lot across the coast highway, walk down a long path and through a tunnel to emerge into an old beach community which is now a state park. The restaurant is located there.


Our dinners were delicious!

Watching the sunset to the sound of the waves was relaxing and coffee and a generous portion of Beignets was a great end to a wonderful evening. We even met a man who had just visited his grandmother who lives in our town, not far from our home! It's a small world.

We did not NEED these, but they were delicious! Vanilla ice cream and a fudge sauce accompanied the hot beignets.

We are so greatful to our children for this wonderful, restful memory. We are especially thankful for our daughter-in-law who I'm SURE spearheaded the event. It was a time we will always treasure.

The Grandchild

Our grandson is a drummer. He plays drums for 4 to 5 hours a day. He uses pots and pans. He uses toy drums. On his second birthday his parents bought him a real, miniature drum set. He is not allowed to have real sticks until 10am, so as not to annoy the neighbors. He occasionally uses toothbrushes because they are quieter. When he came to visit me earlier, I had to hide the bamboo knitting needles I keep in a stein on the hearth. He thought they were drum sticks. His dad is a worship leader and this child has grown up watching his dad play in a band. He encourages his dad to get his guitar if he is home. Uncle B must play the piano. I was encouraged to run around. He counts, "Two, Four! " while hitting the sticks together to signal the beginning of the song. He holds his head like a drummer, hits the symbols like a drummer and has begun making rhythms. The first day he got the drum set, his mother pulled bloody sticks from his blistered hands. When his dad opened for Steven Curtis Chapman, he was able to go in the back room and compare blisters with Steven's drummer, his son. You see him here pretending he is playing with the band in church. The boy has drive.

We are home. Finally.

Airplane lands at 11:00pm. Get luggage and take tram to long term parking. Parking brake is frozen. Back car out of spot with parking brake engaged, place in middle of our lane in the long term lot and drive car back and forth trying to unfreeze brake. No luck. I call AAA. They say they will try to unfreeze brake but may have to tow. We will need to find ride home. It is now midnight and everyone we know is probably in bed. Husband tries to rock car some more. No luck. Parking lot attendant takes husband to Enterprise Rental Car. They are closed. They go to National/ Alamo. Driver leaves him there because they are open. They have no cars and husband realizes he has the keys to our car. I am waiting for AAA with daughter. We tell lot attendant to pick up husband, bring him back to lot with keys in hand. They must do run through airport to pick up passengers. While waiting, one passenger arrives at lot to retrieve car. Lot has probably 400 cars and his car is parked next to us. Our car partially blocks him. With much navigation, he can get out of spot next to our car which can not be moved. Husband arrives with keys. Driver drops him off at Hertz. AAA arrives. He is going to tow car, but I remind him that he is to try to unlock brakes before towing. He rocks car like hubby did and unlocks brakes. Unbelievable. Hubby has just paid for rental, I call and tell him to undo this. I pay for parking, pick up hubby. We stop at gas station to fill up. Battery is dead. An angel appears with a fancy battery charger and we are jumped in seconds. Pass deer grazing on side of freeway. Perhaps he was in the middle of the road minutes earlier? Pass church sign with this saying, "Character is revealed in times of crisis." Classic. Arrive home at 2:00am. Fall into bed. The End.

One sleeve, coming up. Size 8, 12 inch needle. Does anyone else think this is an awkward sized needle? 12 inches is too short for round knitting comfortably. I could use DPN's but I like the smoothness of knitting in the round and prefer circulars when given a choice.

No man can invent anything as pretty as dill growing in the summer. Of course I need to pinch off these pretty blooms as I don't need any dill seed, but this morning I decided to capture their delicate beauty. I love the smell of fresh picked dill. I may have to search some recipes, just to use it more.

These nasturtiums brighten my pot of herbs. They are edible...maybe they will show up in our salad tonight?

The Earthboxes are performing well! This year, the website updated the materials used for replanting, potting mix, fertilizer and dolomite. They have recommended brands they find work best and I'm thinking they are right. I seem to have much more fruit right away instead of so much beautiful leafy growth. We have already decided to add two more boxes next year. We live in an area where everyone fertilizes their lawns and the runoff of chemicals is a concern. These self-enclosed systems are a cure and use less water!

The Cherry tomatoes grow great in a large pot with an ivy trellis over them to make them pretty and give them support.

All winter I have every light on in the house. When the heat hits, the lights go off and the fans are poised for action. The wettest spring on record....24.78 inches of rain in March, April and May has been followed by hot weather. So soon, I am hoping for rain. Fickle aren't we?

I Don't Want to See Red

Every night, right when we go to bed, the weather channel looks like this. Red. That's bad. Purple. That's even worse.

Lines of storms, usually moving across Indiana or coming up from the south, sweep across in a hard line with high winds and drenching rain. A branch came down in the back, the grass is high and unmowable and mosquitos are waiting for the day they can begin their feasting. The power went out for a full day, the freezer contents had to be relocated and we spent a night bailing the sump pump as our battery back-up even failed. There are puddles everywhere. I'm thinking I can't wait until winter so we can safely venture outside.

This picture is bad. This is called waiting to hear a siren that tells you to hit the basement. Of course, that's what a normal person would think. But here in the 'Nati, they tell us when a thunderstorm is coming ( I can hear it, so why do I need a siren?) and that we need to watch for tornadoes. I have yet to figure out how in the world we are supposed to know WHEN to go to the basement. That would be a tornado warning, meaning - GO TO THE BASEMENT! NOW! We have no warning for that, unless you haven't lost power and can watch TV. We do have a weather radio that our weatherman tells us to keep by our bed. We've tried that. It wakes us to tell us a tornado is in a city 3 hours away. It serves to insure that we get no sleep if there is severe weather anywhere in a 5 hour radius. This makes no sense. Not to be mean, but I would like to sleep when Lexington is having bad weather.
So we watch the weather channel and pray the power doesn't go out. It gives us Cincinnati weather only. We used to be able to tune the local weather channel from the TV in on our weather radio, which had TV bands. But now that everything is CONVENIENTLY HD, our radio can't pick it up.
I have one question. How does any of this technology help us know when to go to the basement? That's all I want to know.

As for knitting, I have casted on (is that a word?) a Wonderful Wallaby for my grandson and my dog has rediscovered his love for yarn. 240 yds. of Plymouth Encore woven into a knotted mess like you can't believe in under 4 minutes. God bless my husband who unknotted and wound the entire skein for me.

I said I didn't want to see red, but that is not entirely true. My husband got me some beautiful red roses for my birthday, which was lovely...even though 60 is getting too close for comfort.

Magic Moment Scarf

I have not been blogging because there has been little knitting going on. The above scarf is finally finished, and though I decided in the process that lace might not be as enjoyable to knit as other mindless projects, the finished product is beautiful enough to already have a new lace project in my queue. Once again, blocking is the key and the beauty of the design and the softness of the fiber comes alive once blocked. I am really pleased with the finished product!

I am happy to report that my sister is finished with radiation and was able to be present for the birth of her sixth grandchild! She still has meds and various treatments she has to endure, but so far, so good! God has been good to her and is still orchestrating the lives of the people we love.

The past two years have been filled with tragedy, disappointment and hardship for so many people in our lives. We are reminded that without God, everything looks hopeless. But we have a hope that surpasses the bad things that come. And then there are babies and weddings and job offers and kindnesses along the way that remind us that life is still good and can be enjoyed. God is good and loves us and He alone holds the future.

I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love; I lifted the yoke from their neck and bent down to feed them. Hosea 11:4

Daytime Television

Today I turned on the TV. I was working and thought I would have it on in the background. What a mistake.

The Lifetime Lift commercials have pointed out just how ugly my neck and chin are. They reminded me that men no longer look at me and smile as I sit at the stop light. My life has no meaning since I actually LOOK my age.

QVC showed me that my wardrobe is unstylish, I don't own enough jewels or purses, and my skin care products are all wrong.

ION showed a cook making vegan petit fours. No animals used in anyway. I should not even think of eating animals. I was so looking forward to a turkey sandwich for lunch...

The news showed one place in Alaska with gasoline for $6.75 a gallon. Oh, and jobs took a big dive this week.

The weatherman was happy to report that the sun was out today, a rarity here in Cincinnati, but the next three days will bring more rain.

So, I turned off the TV. In the old days, the television was for entertainment. Nothing about daytime TV is entertaining. Unless you catch Little House on the Prairie first thing in the morning. In the future I think I will stick with Pandora.
Travis Ryan has his own station now and since I birthed him, THAT is entertaining...

I am reminded of God's view on what we take in. He is wise. He knows that what we think about changes us.

My Student

One of the things that bring me great joy, is teaching others to knit. I have taught adults and children and find that children seem to pick it up so much easier. Their minds are eager, especially if they have decided they WANT to do this. Their fingers are nimble and they easily come up with their "own" way to hold the yarn and needles. This little girl is amazing. 9 years old and she is off to the races!

We started with a lesson of casting on- the long tail cast on. We did it over and over and over. Then I taught her the knit stitch and told her to knit every row for homework.

The next week, we talked about what the fabric should look like: garter stitch vs. stockinette. Then I taught her to purl and told her to purl a row, then knit a row. She, like most of us, was not that fond of purling.

The following week, I introduced the One Row Handspun Scarf. It has all the above techniques with a kb (knit in the back) thrown in for fun. After looking at progress, examining mistakes and a few frogging sessions, she was ready to cast on a washcloth. We practiced reading a pattern and when both were finished, we learned the bind off.

This last week, she made three more washcloths and even had them bound off before coming to my house. We cast on a hat, to be knit in the round, talked about joining, started knitting with the tail (oops) and I let her do the frogging this time. She understands what the stitches should look like and frogging made sense! I think you really are getting it when you can fix your mistakes!

Her next stop is the WEBS sale (with some help from mom)...we may be tackling an easy sweater soon!

It's spring and everyone wants to go outside. After the drought we had last year, I can not complain about all the rain we are having. How much rain, you ask? Just think squishy. Everything is squishy.

Spring is Here

Spring is here and this dessert is a great way to welcome the season! Good friends joined us for dinner and we all enjoyed a yummy slice of this dessert. It is fruit pizza on steroids and especially good for special celebrations.

White Chocolate Fruit Tart

3/4 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar
1–1 / 2 cups all-purpose flour
Filling:
1 package (10 ounces) vanilla baking chips, melted
1/4 cup whipping cream
1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
1 can (20 ounces) pineapple chunks, reserve liquid
1 pint fresh strawberries, sliced
1 can (11 ounces) mandarin oranges, drained
2 kiwifruit, peeled and sliced
Glaze:
3 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

Directions:

In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Gradually add flour; mix well. Press into an ungreased 11-inch tart pan or 12-inch pizza pan with sides. Bake at 300 degrees for 25-30 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool. In a mixing bowl, beat chips and cream. Add cream cheese and beat until smooth. Spread over crust. Chill for 30 minutes. Drain pineapple, reserving 1/ 2 cup juice; set juice aside. Arrange strawberries, pineapple, oranges and kiwi over filling. In a saucepan, combine sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice and reserved pineapple juice; bring to a boil over medium heat. Boil for 2 minutes or until thickened, stirring constantly. Cool; brush over fruit. Chill 1 hour before serving. Store in the refrigerator.

My sister has had the goal of seeing her own grandchild born in May as she goes through the horrendous regime of an attack on breast cancer. Her eyes are on the prize...a warm little baby.

WEBS sale!

I am officially stocked up for the year! The WEBS sale is here and it is worth having a spree if you plan to do a lot of projects this year. Fall with a touch of spring colors are my fancy and I figure I saved quite a bit of money, not to mention being able to choose from a wider variety of colors than are available from any of the LYS in my area. I am a big fan of the Cascade 220 heathers and they have every color imaginable. Let the knitting begin!

Three

One of these does not belong to us. Two of them are sisters. You can imagine my husband's alarm when he went to the garage one morning, opened the garage door and THREE black cats emerged. It seems that another stray likes it here. He is a young, un-neutered male and my cats don't seem to mind him. He is the one trying to look like he doesn't see the other two keeping guard. Once again, he is starving and we have begun feeding him so we can take him to a shelter. He just showed up, making me think he was abandoned by some irresponsible person. This is becoming to be a ritual over here. Poor thing.

Knitting for Babies

There are babies everywhere! Have you noticed? Maybe it is my stage of life and the approach of spring, maybe the ages of my kids and their friends, but pregnant women, adopting families, even friends doing foster care abound. It is time to think about baby knitting!
These sweet gift tags have washing instructions and come in various colors and designs.

This darling bib would make a great gift with the use of some simple dish cotton. A set of three would be nicer! This pattern is free and can be found here.

Every baby needs a blanket. This blanket is the best of both worlds, looking like a quilt but made with soft, cozy yarn! It is designed by a male knitter, herbalist, and jack of all trades who lives in a log cabin in the woods of the Appalachians. He has a Master's in Fine Arts and teaches in his local yarn shop. His website has some fun stuff for the country living enthusiast. But most of all, he has one fine baby blanket pattern.

Every child loves to play dress-up and these would do nicely for a future dinosaur loving child. Maybe even paired with this hat.

Sometimes a baby needs a toy. A soft, snuggly elephant perhaps?

Bad Bad Blogger

I've been a little busy. This is my life. Wait, no, this is a box of spilled Wheaties...well, same difference. A great two week visit with my sister, accompanying her to doctor's appointments, radiation, physical therapy and squeezing in some yarn stops, jet lag after a red eye, putting in my two week notice at work to follow some other avenues and care for my family (YEAH!), wrapping up loose ends, watching the grass grow, mowing and mower breaking with the first mow, watching gas prices approach $4.00, watching grocery prices skyrocket, ANOTHER stray cat (we have a history of attracting strays), taxes, dirty windows, basement mess, unfinished painting projects calling my name, and last but not least - THE ANNUAL WEBS SALE!!! Cascade 220 and Plymouth Encore Stock up for me!

I am thinking about my garden, but have done nothing about it thus far. I am dreaming of fresh tomatoes and green beans. My grandson on the west coast has his first garden all planted!

I think he enjoyed himself!

This has been a winter of learning. The trials of those I love cause me to discover more about myself.

I have never thought myself to be a worrier, but I have woken up more than once with gripping anxiety that lingers into the day. God is my refuge and strength and as I have said before, all I can do is pray. And pray. And read my bible which is God's love letter to me. My friend writes this simple daily devotional and she says it well, and always right when I need to hear it.

Interesting People

People are interesting. If you take the time to engage others and show interest, you can meet interesting people wherever you go. The close quarters of an airplane for 5 1/2 hours from Alaska to Minneapolis proves to be more interesting than most however. Maybe it is because people that live in Alaska or go there for work or play have lives so different from mine, that I find them fascinating.

I have met the head of mental health services for the entire state of Alaska. I met a man who flies there every three weeks to work on the North Slope. I met a woman from New Hampshire heading there to share teaching methods with Alaskan educators, so that schools can get better. (As a homeschooler, I was thinking "good luck with that...") I met a soldier who has served twice in Iraq and is heading to Afghanistan for the third time. His situation is dicey because he just broke BOTH ankles snow boarding. He has a new bride, but has only spent 2 months with her in the last year. Even on the flight, they were sitting apart. He had a bright outlook and loves our country. He is disturbed by those in our country who get handouts, yet have no intention of making something of themselves. He observed my airplane knitting and told me his favorite socks and beanie in the desert are his hand knits made from Qiviut. This fiber from the musk ox is 8 times warmer than wool and softer than cashmere. Apparently he found some for 79.00/ skein from Canada and his aunt did him the honor. His buddies were all jealous. He is one of our country's finest.

The most interesting person I met was a young girl from Talkeetna, Alaska. It is a small town at the base of Mt. McKinley. She plans on joining the Navy, then attending med school to become a physician. This was a mature, beautiful young woman. Perhaps the reason why she exuded such maturity, was the life she leads. She helps with her mother's business...running a small gift shop and producing jams and jellies to sell. I asked her where she got the berries and other supplies. The answer astounded me. "We pick it all in the wild." When asked how many jars they put up each year, she said, "12,000." Now I don't know if you have ever canned before. I am quite proud of myself when putting up 48 jars of peaches. But 12,000!!! And picking all that fruit? This girl has had time to reflect, watch out for bears and a spirit that allows her to do a huge job that may seem tedious at times without playing the "boring" card. Needless to say, I was impressed. I hope her mother's business booms! Someday, there will be another fine physician.
